The importance of a good night's sleep

Here at Mattress Mick’s Waterford we care about your mental as well as your physical health. You may not realise how important a good night’s sleep is to your overall health but we’re to tell you that’s it’s vital!

Sleep is as important to our health as eating, drinking and actually…breathing. It allows our bodies to repair themselves and our brains to consolidate our memories and process information. We’re just like computers and you know what happens if you don’t regularly shut down your computer - it becomes slow, and sluggish, and if computers could be moody, you can be sure they’d be grumpy too!

Here’s the bottom line: buying a quality mattress is the best single investment you can make. Here are just five good reasons:

Good for your back

A good mattress will support each part of your body equally. Without this even weight distribution, your lower back won’t be sufficiently supported, meaning your spine won’t be in a neutral position. Improper spinal alignment can cause a whole host of problems over time, including chronic pain. If you’re not getting the proper level of support, it’s likely that your mattress is too soft. Spring mattresses can cause the weight to rest too heavily on your shoulders and hips, resulting in muscle tension in your unsupported lumbar region. Mattress Mick Waterford has Mattresses that will support the natural curve of your spine.

2. You will sleep better

If you don’t have a good mattress, you’ll be tossing and turning for the night and more often than not, you won’t even realise why - that is until you finally sleep on a quality mattress. The most common phrase that a Mattress Mick customer uses is “Oh my god” followed by “where have you been all my life”. A great mattress allows for a great sleep and you don’t need us to tell you again how important a good night’s sleep is.

3. Reduce Stress

The better the sleep, the lower the stress levels. When you’re sleep deficient, your body produces more stress hormones, which in turn increases your blood pressure – not ideal for feeling calm. Regular, deep sleep (encouraged by a good mattress) helps to keep your blood pressure low and your mood relaxed.

4. Reduces allergies

Dust mites like to set up home in mattresses – they’re unavoidable, but they’re also the leading cause of indoor allergies. A mattress that has a denser structure helps to discourage these mites; there’s simply not as much room for them to live. This means you may see a reduction in hay fever-like symptoms – fewer sneezes and more snoozing! A good quality mattress is about much more than comfort (although that’s an undeniable bonus). With the right mattress, you’re likely to see a wealth of benefits to your overall health. Ask the brilliant staff at Mattress Mick Waterford about mattresses and allergies and you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find out.

5. Less snoring (really!)

Snoring occurs when your airway is partially obstructed during sleep. It’s often associated with sleeping on your back, but your mattress could also be somewhat responsible. If it sags too much when you’re lying on it, your head and neck won’t be adequately supported – this causes your throat to constrict, and the snoring to start. If you want a snore-free slumber, choose a medium-firm mattress.
